Pioneers of Color Science: Faber Birren

Color plays an important role in our daily lives. Among our sensory qualities, color has historically attracted the greatest level of interest. At the ISCC/IACC-NA conference at Yale University this presentation will be dedicated to covering the life of a pioneer who had a lasting impact in the field of color science and technology. Faber Birren was an American pioneer, author, historian and consultant on color theory who is credited as having established the profession of color consultants in 1936 and left a permanent legacy at Yale University in 1971 by establishing the “Faber Birren Collection”. The depository at the university’s Art and Architecture Library is one of the largest in the world with books on various aspects of color including color theory, masterworks by the most noted color theorists, human perception and experience of color, ancient philosophical views on color, religious connotations of color, applications in art, and the latest scientific discoveries pertaining to color.

Bio

With a BSc in Textile Chemistry and Engineering, and a few years of industrial experience in the coloration sector, Prof. Shamey obtained a Master of Science degree in Dyeing and Finishing jointly from the “Colour Chemistry Department” and “School of Textile Industries” of Leeds University (1993) and a PhD from the Colour Chemistry Dept. of Leeds University, UK (1997).

After a short stint as a postdoctoral fellow, he joined Heriot-Watt University in Galashiels (Scotland) in 1998, as Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Dyeing, Printing and Finishing.

In 2003, Prof. Shamey joined the TECS Dept. at North Carolina State University (NCSU) where he served as the Polymer and Color Chemistry (PCC) program director from 2009 till 2018. He is currently a distinguished CIBA professor of color science and technology, a University Faculty Scholar, and the director of Color Science and Imaging Laboratories at NCSU. He is an honorary professor at Tianjin Polytechnic University (China) and author of over 100 scientific manuscripts, several book chapters and two books and has chaired over 30 PhD theses.

Prof. Shamey is the current President of Inter-Society Color Council (USA) and a Fellow of the Society of Dyers and Colourists and a Chartered Colourist (CCol) (UK).
