Short Courses and Tours

Short Courses - Sunday, June 7 - 1:30 to 4:30

Short Course #1 Humane Color Design
$125 (must pre-register) Limited to 20 participants
How principles from nature can be utilized to create healthier living spaces

This short course presented by The IACC will use a hands-on approach to help develop our basic understanding of how and why color affects us both psychologically and physiologically. Using IACC systems and tools, participants will learn how to collect and quantify color information directly from an environment and then organize it into a coherent, functioning color system.

Through the lens of environmental psychology and an experiential exercise, we will then organize this color data into a 3D color space to study and discuss colors' importance and functions in different architectures.

The workshop will conclude with a visually compelling presentation that highlights the deeply evolved interconnections between color, light, and form in our environments and how it can support the Human condition.

Presenter: Jason Bemis, Lead Presenter IACC-NA

Short Course #2 Colour Literacy in the Classroom
$125 (must pre-register) Limited to 20 participants
Exploring Topics at the Intersection of Art and Science

If you teach color in any discipline this course is for you! The newly approved ISCC/AIC Joint Colour Literacy Project Committee is currently working on the design of prototype modules for use in classrooms from kindergarten through university.

Come play with Colour in new ways while providing feedback on the first draft of the Colour Lit program materials! Members of the Colour Literacy Project committee will introduce you to a test series of innovative interactive exercises that bridge between the science and art of colour as practiced in the 21st century.

Materials and tools will be available for exploring hands-on activities designed to expand the basics of the traditional colour theory and encourage students to learn more about the inter-disciplinary nature of color in the 21st century.

Presenter: Maggie Maggio, assisted by Luanne Stovall

Short Courses - Wednesday, June 10 - 9:30 to 12:30

Short Course #3 Josef Albers’s Color Experiments
$125 (must pre-register) Limited to 20 participants
A hands-on experience of learning color as Albers presented it

Working directly from Albers's teaching notes and student recollections, Albers Foundation educator Fritz Horstman will lead experiments such as "make one color become two" and "the four color worlds". Josef Albers' color course was legendary. The Bauhaus master, who also was director of Black Mountain College and head of the Yale School of Art, taught generations of students to see color in new and unexpected ways. Over a lifetime of teaching, he created a series of exercises that opened up the subject of color. In this four hour workshop, we will explore a few of these exercises. There is no prerequisite of painting or color experience.

All materials, including ColorAid paper, will be provided. Participants will be able to take their exercises home.

Presenter: Fritz Horstman, Albers Foundation Artist Residency and Education Coordinator

Short Course #4 A Little Color Science Goes a Long Way
$125 (must pre-register) Limited to 20 participants
Intro to Color Science for Architectural Color Consultants

Over the years, you’ve learned to trust your eyes and your instincts when it comes to choosing colors for your clients. But do you ever wish you had a “second opinion” or more hard data about undertones and reflectance levels? Is it possible that a little bit of knowledge of color science might help you determine the best colors for a space or help you make a stronger case with your more particular clients?

Join prominent color scientists as they demonstrate basic methods for using color measurement tools combined with a lighting booth that simulates a range of lighting conditions. Watch how colors that look great together under one set of lights suddenly goes awry under another. Learn why it happens and how to prevent it from happening in your clients’ homes in this fun and informative hands-on workshop.

Paint swatches from major manufacturers will be available so you can put together some sample palettes. Use some of your favorite colors and then measure and test to your heart’s content! You’ll leave this short course with a better understanding of the role color science plays in the creative use of color for the built environment.

Presenter: Dave Wyble, assisted by Ann Laidlaw and Jean Hoskin
