A New 21st Century Color Curriculum for University Students

Luanne’s presentation focuses on the critical need for a new 21st century color curriculum for university students, in line with the goals of the ISCC-AIC Color Literacy Project. My work at the University of Texas at Austin reframes color education as a dynamic interdisciplinary project and positions color as an ever-evolving phenomenon relevant to sensory perception, communication and visual literacy - not just for artists and designers but for everyone. I will address the challenges and opportunities involved in designing and teaching The New Color, an elective upper level course for all majors introduced in the Spring 2019, and offered again in Spring 2020. The course is organized into two components. Wednesday night Color Salons are free and open to the public. The salons pair guest speakers from diverse disciplines with color-focused topics such as the neuroscience of color vision; the role of color in biology and anthropology; color pigment technology; color, light, and wellness in the built environment; color and early modern art; color communication in theatre and film; and color marketing. Friday morning labs provide hands-on experience for color interaction, collaborative research projects, site visits, and group discussions for assigned readings. The long term goal of The New Color and Color Literacy Project is to establish Color as a robust STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Learning Model for all educational levels, structured with clearly defined competencies aligned with the needs of 21st century industries – in order to enhance communications across all disciplines for more informed, inspired, and effective solutions.
