The Impact of Color in the Hospitality Environment

I will present a comparison study on the significance of the interior colour impact, using 3 examples of colour and design application with my professional involvement in recent past private club/hospitality settings. These will include a PGA Tour golf clubhouse, a private members club building (with a designation from the Canadian National Heritage Society), and a Royal appointed titled yacht clubhouse.

A background to IACC/NA will be given on the overall importance of both interior colour choices in an architectural setting and the lighting effect with the psychological and physiological outcomes.  Research will also be outlined on what must be studied including the historical architectural reference, natural surroundings, and building location to the proposed building/rooms being renovated/painted as well as the intended purposes of those building/rooms.

The overall results in relation to the impact of the interior colour schemes of each project will be summarized and analyzed, resulting in answering whether the significance and importance of correct interior colour use and its overall impact has a crucial positive effect on the members in a private club or hospitality architectural setting.

Bio

For nearly 25 years Interior Designer Sheri Peterson has built her reputation on relationships developed with clients, suppliers, and trades. With a portfolio that includes residential, commercial, and hospitality work (even a Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker ship!) her strengths are rooted in those relationships, but also her ability to envision how a space is used and what the finished result will look like. She gets how families live, how moms juggle, how busy houses should flow. Understanding the importance of a hotel lobby easing traffic flow during check-out time and how staff and diners move around a busy restaurant comes from years of experience. That understanding and experience also helps her work quickly – “I spend a lot of time thinking on my feet at a job site!”

It all begins with communication. She listens to the client first and tries to make the decision-making process as quick and easy as possible. She believes in a collaborative approach, as everyone from the home or business owner to contractor and tradespeople have expertise to share. They all contribute to complete a successful job. Most importantly though, her expertise is that projects are inspired and often begin with color. Color and combinations of color have an interaction with humans on all levels. If the color is not exact, the perfect ambiance will not be created. It must be right - it’s the foundation, spirit, and mood of the project.

Past commercial projects have included The Royal Victoria Yacht Club, The Parkside Hotel, The Victoria Regent Hotel, The Union Club of British Columbia, The Uplands Golf Club, The Chateau Victoria Hotel and Suites, Pacific Landing Developments, The Travelodge in Sidney BC, The Oak Bay Beach Hotel, The Accent Inns, countless professionals’ offices, along with small restaurant and retail spaces. Residential Projects range from single room renovations, many high-end kitchen and bathroom renovations, to new custom home construction both on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland.
